The Mobile Future

Following on from yesterdays blog about the TEDx event we attended in Liverpool on Monday, I came across this video entitled “Productivity Future Vision” on youtube. It depicts a future where technology is so deeply integrated in our day to day lives that had I seen this even 10 years ago I would have been blown away and cowered behind my VCR.

It just goes to show how technology creeps up on you, now most of us have iPhones/iPods/iPads or non Apple equivalents and these devices can, in essence, do most of the stuff shown in the video, albeit a little less seamlessly and without the help of the interactive cars and buildings (and even they are beginning to appear, see Intecho). It appears “The Mobile Future” is already here…

Jurassic Park Screen Print

Jurassic Park has to be one of our office’s favorite films since childhood, we can often be fond humming or whistling the theme as we go about our daily duties. I came across this 10 colour screen print from MONDO by JC Richard and I think its unbelievable.

It will go on sale today (27/10/11) at a random time announced through their twitter page. There are 2 editions, the standard has an edition 375 for $45 and there is an art edition of 125 for $75.

To ‘S’ or not to ‘S’

Yesterday Apple’s new CEO, Tim Cook, took to the stage for the first time to fill Steve Jobs’ well worn New Balance trainers and announce the next generation iPhone.

Sadly it was not the iPhone 5 we had all hoped for and instead was the much feared iPhone 4S. Fair enough it has a beefed up processor in the Apple designed dual-core ‘A5′ chip, an 8 mega-pixel rear camera with the edition of an extra lens and a larger aperture allowing more light in creating sharper images and the ability to shoot 1080p HD video. There is also a new battery but on closer inspection it only adds an extra hour of talk-time, so no great shakes.

Along with the iPhone announcement came talk of IOS5 (iPhone software update with over 200 new features), iClould (sync-able data between all your devices over the ‘cloud’) and an interesting new feature called “SIRI”. Essentially a personal assistant kept prisoner within your phone that when asked has the ability to; read your texts, schedule appointments in your calender, set your alarms, give you hourly weather forecasts and so much more. Annoyingly this feature is restricted only to iPhone 4S, much like the video camera was only enabled within the 3GS. These kind of science-fiction realisations however often have little practical use, imagine standing in line at the post office and asking your phone to read your text then replying via dictation, these are the actions of someone who sees no shame in wearing a Bluetooth headset 100% of their day and not just when a hands free situation is called for.

So will I be queuing up at an ungodly hour in the cold on Friday 14th October to get my iPhone 4S…… Sadly not. Call me shallow but if I’m going to upgrade my iPhone and fork out a couple hundred pounds I want it to at least look different, even the slightest redesign and I’d be reaching for the sleeping bag and preparing for a night on the streets outside the Carphone Warehouse.

I guess we’ll all have to wait patiently for the iPhone 5, which if the release cycle history is anything to go by, we’ve got another year to avoid smashing our screens. Good luck everyone.

Textbook…

Last week two of the igoo team Jack and Amy went back to school. Not for re-sits (although those French GCSE grades could’ve been better) but to teach the next generation the ways of the web world!

As part of a Creative Partnerships project, Jack and Amy went along to Hollingworth Business and Enterprise College in Rochdale to hold workshops in web and graphic design with a group of year 9 pupils.

The end goal of the project is to launch a website on which to showcase all the work that the Hollingworth pupils have produced. Practitioners in film production, video game creation, journalism, creative writing, sound production and radio dramas all held workshops within the school and participated in the project, so the website should be an interesting mixing pot!

In our final workshop the pupils worked on a name and brand for their project, now entitled ‘Project8’ (due to there being 8 distinct sections.) They came up with a fantastic logo and planned out the layout of their web pages. Watch this space to see more…

Police.uk Crime Map Launched

Yesterday Police.uk launched an amazing new service that lets you search last month’s crime statistics in any specified area of the UK and displays them beautifully. We’ve only just been able to get on and have a look as demand was so high yesterday the servers went down.

This type of service will prove invaluable for home buyers, ‘curtain twitchers’ and anyone wanting to know which dark ally to avoid on their walk home.

Naturally the first thing we did was to see how our office fared:

Using those results as a benchmark I searched for where I grew up:

3 crimes is pretty impressive, I wonder if anyone out there can do better, let us know how your local area got on.
