Huge rolling archive of titles from classic 8/16-bit games of the 80′s (and 90′s?). Seeing all these titles together makes me realise how many hours i must have wasted growing up trying to get past level 99 of some game which looked and played almost exactly like the last one. Some of these featured very heavily in my dreams for years.

Pepsi Reveals World’s First 100% Plant-Based Bottle

No doubt motivated in part by rival Coca-Cola’s unveiling of its Plant Bottle, which contains up to 30 percent bio-based material, Pepsi have just announced that they have produced a bottle which is made up of 100% bio-based raw materials, including switch grass, pine bark and corn husks.

By combining biological and chemical processes, PepsiCo said it has identified methods to create a molecular structure that is identical to the current petroleum-based PET (polyethylene terephthalate), which will result in a bottle that looks and feels the same as existing PET beverage containers.

PepsiCo said its “green” bottle is 100 percent recyclable and will allow it to significantly reduce its carbon footprint, and whats even more impressive is the idea that the new bottle will eventually allow for by-products from its food businesses, including potato peels from chips and orange peels from juice to be recycled into bottles.

This kind of movement towards a ‘zero waste’ society illustrated by Pepsi is really impressive and will hopefully encourage others so follow suit with similar technologies.

Police.uk Crime Map Launched

Yesterday Police.uk launched an amazing new service that lets you search last month’s crime statistics in any specified area of the UK and displays them beautifully. We’ve only just been able to get on and have a look as demand was so high yesterday the servers went down.

This type of service will prove invaluable for home buyers, ‘curtain twitchers’ and anyone wanting to know which dark ally to avoid on their walk home.

Naturally the first thing we did was to see how our office fared:

Using those results as a benchmark I searched for where I grew up:

3 crimes is pretty impressive, I wonder if anyone out there can do better, let us know how your local area got on.

Crazy but Unique Website

I played around on this site for at least ten minutes and I’m still none the wiser to what its actual purpose is!

The myth of the page fold: evidence from user testing

Being in the website design industry, and having regualr contact with clients who have a basic understanding of the web, you start to notice the same topics of conversation come up time and time again. One of the common dogmas which tends to arise is the “we cant put anything below the fold”, basically referring to the practice of trying to keep your important content “above the fold” (so no scrolling is required to see it).

The logic is fundamentally sound – “dont put anything important below the fold”, so its fairly difficult to make a counter case when a situation calls for it. This is especially so when you’re up against a particularly strong advocate of the fold being the “edge” of the page (don’t get too near or you might sail off the edge of the internet!). A good article to refer people to next time this discussion comes up is The myth of the page fold: evidence from user testing (via 456 berea street). The article, which is based on data from over 800 user testing sessions, makes the case that the fold is not a significant barrier to users viewing the full length of the page.

The article is full of clear points and supporting screenshots and test data, and some important key points are made to conclude…

  1. 1. Less is more – don’t be tempted to cram everything above the fold. Good use of whitespace and imagery encourages exploration.
  2. 2. Stark, horizontal lines discourage scrolling – this doesn’t mean stop using horizontal full width elements. Have a small amount of content just visible, poking up above the fold to encourage scrolling.
  3. 3. Avoid the use of in-page scroll bars – the browser scrollbar is an indicator of the amount of content on the page. iFrames and other elements with scroll bars in the page can break this convention and may lead to content not being seen.

Links in Print: The Story of a Beautiful Failure

This arrived in my inbox today, fresh from the fingers of iA, a design agency who’s work i am a big fan of.

Tages-Anzeiger-Redesign

In January 2009 we were invited to take part in a paid pitch for the print redesign for the Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger. All in all five agencies took part in the pitch. We were the only UX oriented agency. The story of a beautiful failure.

Having found out the same day that we had lost a pitch of our own, it was nice to read of the misfortunes of another! But more interesting to read their perspective on their ‘beautiful failure’.

Man drives Rolls-Royce into Tesco over missing mattress

A bit off-topic i know, but this did strike a chord with me. Having been eagerly awaiting delivery of my new matress for over 7 weeks (yes, 7), this article in the telegraph caught my eye this morning.

A motorist drove his Rolls-Royce through a window and into a Tesco superstore after receiving a bed from the firm which was delivered without a mattress, his wife claimed.
